For FW19, adidas Consortium has teamed up with Perth-based sneaker and apparel retailer Highs and Lows in their latest celebration of the Torsion System Technology. Founded in 2005 by Matt Thomas, the first Highs and Lows store aimed to be the go-to destination in Australia for those who shared its founder’s love of sneaker and streetwear culture. Few would argue that it hasn’t achieved this coveted goal, with two subsequent stores compounding its position. A host of highly sought-after sneaker collaborations have also played a part in that journey, bringing global recognition outside of their home continent.
With their new collaboration with adidas Consortium, the Highs and Lows team turned their attention to the Torsion Edberg Comp. The original Edberg was a signature shoe for Swedish tennis ace Stefan Edberg, launching a year after his first Grand Slam win at the Australian Open in 1985. Its green and yellow colourway popped in a way that few tennis shoes did at the time, ensuring that it became a sought-after style for sneakerheads around the world.
For their take on the new version, Highs and Lows looked to that original shoe and stripped back its colours for a more refined, minimalist reimagining. The palette combines with an equally understated range of materials, with aged rubber and premium leathers creating the appearance of a shoe lifted straight from the archives. This blast-from-the-past approach is brought into the present day through the Torsion Edberg Comp’s use of neoprene and EVA cushioning, plus of course the implementation of Torsion System technology. The result is a shoe with one foot on the courts of the past and one foot on the streets of today: a perfect combination for celebrating Torsion System technology and the ultra-flexible stability it provides.

The latest edition of the Communitas program sees Social Status come together with adidas under the Consortium umbrella to facilitate the shared goal of youth empowerment in the creative industries. Known not only for its influence on fashion and streetwear, but also for the mentorship, support, and guidance that they offer to local youth, the Atlanta-based retailer has become a pillar in their community. Through their beSocial spaces, they host panels and hands-on workshops covering fashion, music, entrepreneurship and beyond.
Brought to life through a partnership with the adidas Sound Labs initiative, the Social Status Communitas program focusses on talent incubation through music education, providing the next generation of creators with valuable tools, resources, and opportunities. Throughout the summer, adidas Consortium and Social Status came together to host a series of workshops centered around the opening of a new beSocial x adidas Sound Labs creative hub and recording studio in Atlanta. Through these workshops, a group of students helped to design the new creative space, pitch the creative concept for the Communitas Social Status campaign, and develop creative goals of their own, guided by esteemed, Atlanta-based mentors in each field including renowned music producer. David Banner who says of the programme ‘There’s so many times, especially as artists circumstances separate you from your people, to be able to be so close, to be able to socialize, connect, and be open in a safe space. Most of us didn’t grow up with that opportunity.’
The students participating in the workshops were recommended by members of the greater Social Status network, from designers and artists to musicians and community leaders, in touch with the city’s young changemakers.
James Whitner, founder of Social Status, talks about the significance of working on the adidas Consortium Communitas project and creating the music studio space ‘The idea of the space is to give youth culture a canvas. When I was coming up, I didn’t have a canvas. I didn’t have people to direct traffic or make me aware of where the potholes were. In creating the next experience for Social Status, it was important to try to create something that helped youth culture navigate their way through life.
Capping off the program is the launch of two exclusive reworks of the adidas Originals P.O.D. System silhouette. Made up in premium materials, with nubuck overlays and full-grain leather details sat atop a Primeknit upper, the two shoes feature contrasting black and white tonal colourways.
In one of the workshops, the students were briefed to both find and pitch a concept for the campaign. Once the final idea was chosen, the students worked with the Social Status production team to create assets and featured in the campaign

Although adidas Originals has mostly been celebrating 30 years of Torsion tech by re-releasing classic models, they’re looking towards the timeless support system’s future as well, and aiming to begin its next chapter in earnest with a new silhouette dubbed the Torsion X.
At first glance, the Torsion X certainly cuts a bold figure, one that draws bits and pieces from other Three Stripes lifestyle favorites. Both the tongue and the circular suede eyestays are reminiscent of Kanye West‘s adidas Yeezy 500, while the plastic tube that wraps around the asymmetrical lacing system and heel gives off serious adidas Ozweego vibes. The rest of the upper features a layered combo of synthetics and suede, while a bold branded hit appears on the tongue. Although the top is unquestionably loud, the midsole is even more wild, featuring a split three-part design that uses Boost cushioning and a flexible midfoot support system for fit and feel, plus wild-colored hits on the outsole and overlays for style.

The original marketing slogan for adidas’s ZX series upon its decades-ago debut was “I Want, I Can,” so to honor both the saying and the line itself, adidas has looked back to it for inspiration multiple times, the newest result of which is this ZX 4000 4D.
Themselves a compelling mix of classic Trefoil Brand style and new-age adidas Futurecraft tech, the most notable design detail on these adidas shoes is the bold alternate-colored text that graces the upper of each shoe, with the right foot reading “I WANT” in bright orange, while the left foot states “I CAN” in cool blue. Apart from the attention-demanding split statement, each foot also features small pops of orange and blue on their elegant grey Primeknit uppers. Retro style is then provided by suede overlays that offer embossed detailing on the medial midfoot, and the look is finalized by a signature mint green 4D-printed midsole and a traditional ZX-style outsole.

The new YEEZY BOOST 700 V2 Inertia taking up the mantle of the iconic “Inertia” scheme, the dad shoe classic is now subverting expectations instead of rehashing the same old look. Pairs, though at first glance quite similar, are pitched just slightly higher in tone from its predecessor as grays more so blend into one another rather than contrast. Overlays of smooth leather line the mudguards and heel counter, covering much of the textural mesh constructions that favor a much more neutral visage in comparison to the aforementioned’s slight blue tint.
Taping, which takes the form of the typical logo set up, bear a small sheen that matches near perfect with the divergent tongue shade and plastered toe caps. Sole units are characteristically bulky in their appearance, though their tonal presentation — save for the small hits of orange at its rear — add a more balancing note in unison with the pale gum bottom.

Overt expressions of utility and a hint of outdoor know-how characterize shoes designed under THE10TH banner. With the React Sertu embodying these ideals. A layered upper of nubuck, pebbled leather, suede & woven textile offer a satisfying difference in texture. Underneath Nike deploy their latest cushioning tech (React) that we've all become familiar with over the past year. Design flourishes such as embroidered mini swooshes, toe-box perforations and woven 'THE10TH' labels sign off this latest Nike creation.
